The Vulnerable God
Christmas Day
Luke 2:1-20

I wonder what is it thats so attractive about Christmas. I suspect its got something to do with babies; after all, its what we sing about a baby lying in the straw. Though interestingly, the Gospel writers tell us very little about the baby. All that Luke has to say on the subject is put in one sentence: And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger. Thats it. We arent told his birth weight, what he looked like, the colour of his eyes, how well he fed, or how he slept at night. Its a very abrupt statement about the birth of the worlds saviour. Yet, this baby holds our attention. I wonder why...

A Communal Visit
Advent 4 (C)
Luke 1:39-45

Mary has learned that shes to be mother of Gods Son the longed for Messiah. This is, surely, great news, but its also overwhelming and shocking. Could she even begin to take it in? How can Joseph or their relatives, her friends, the local Rabbi how can any of them begin to understand her situation? Here she is unmarried, probably a young teenager, and now expecting a child. Her pregnancy will be a major scandal. Who can Mary share this knowledge with, which probably remains inexplicable to her? Who will have any understanding; any empathy?

A tension-filled Advent
Advent 3 (C)
Zephaniah 3:14-20; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:7-18

Today is traditionally called Gaudete Sunday, which simply means Rejoicing Sunday. Its an obvious theme in the first two readings. Zephaniah tells the people:
Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart....
God will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Then Paul writes to the faith community in Philippi:
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice the Lord is near.

A rather clear message All will be well. God is at hand. Its a reassuring thought, especially for those who first heard these words...

Signs of Hope
Advent 1 (C)
Jeremiah 33:14-16; Psalm 25:1-10; 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13; Luke 21:25-36

Welcome to Advent. Welcome to the beginning of a new year. The purple marks this season out as a time of preparation and waiting for a coming (because thats what advent means: coming). We tend to focus on the coming of Jesus at Bethlehem. But Advent is far bigger than that. So lets take a journey through our readings and see what it is that were waiting for...

... As we begin this New Year, stand tall and be filled with hope. When we live in love and act in hope when we gather again and again at the altar-table to experience what Jesus did, and to know that Jesus is with us, we are people of Advent hope.
